The Bird Point Series
This series began in 1983 as part of my
exploration of the Turnagain Arm area
just south of Anchorage, Alaska.
Characterized in travel magazines as one
of the most beautiful drives in America
and designated a national scenic byway,
Turnagain Arm is one of the most
ruggedly beautiful land and seascapes
accessible in Alaska. Formed by receding
glaciers thousands of years ago, what
the explorer finds today are the
remaining glacial polished rocks jutting
out from the foot of mountains
bordering the sound. The tidal sound,
filled hundreds of feet deep with glacial
silt and experiencing one of the most
extreme tides in the world shows a new
face each day with its infinitely diverse
silt patterns at low tide. Bird Point is
one of the few remaining untouched
land and sea ecosystems left on the
north rim of the Turnagain Arm.
A pristine pocket of natures marvels.
