| Along with the landscape and portraiture, the nude is one of the first subject matters of photography. Self portraits, studies for paintings, naughty "French" postcards, all are manifestations of the nude in photography. | |
For thirty years I have worked with the nude. I work mostly in the studio with controlled lighting and settings. I work with the figure purely for formalistic reasons. |
|
Within the human form can be found all the shapes of nature. It is beauty that all humans can best relate to. It is after all what we first imprint on as an infants. Need, comfort, sustenance, safety, morph into more complex feelings. As we grow and mature we become aware of our own sexuality and relationships and perspectives change. |
|
Although I find nothing titillating about my work, I do not deny the sexual aspect of my images. The body is both sensual and private. The opportunity of the viewer to linger and gaze is an opportunity to reflect on our own bodies and self-image. |

My work with the nude has given me a chance to investigate issues of body image, gender roles, and the what is and is not considered beautiful in our society. Hal Gage |
