Curriculum Vitae Biographical Sketch Hal Gage (born Harold L Gage Jr) 1959 to present American artist working primarily in photography Hal Gage was born at the end of the baby boomer years in Anchorage, Alaska. He grew up in the small town of Anchorage, Alaska. His love for art started early and continued into high school and college where he studied painting and music. By an off chance he was introduced to photography by his painting mentor Marc Bourassa. Shortly there after he completely immersed himself into photography. After leaving the University of Alaska Anchorage, Gage for a short time earned a living as a rock and roll musician traveling around California and Alaska playing bars and events. By the 80s not satisfied with the night life of a musician he rediscovered his roots in the visual arts and picked up where he had left off. Hal Gage has been involved with the arts community of Anchorage since the early 80s. Since 1983 he has been closely involved with the Alaska Photographic Center, promoting exhibitions of Alaskan photographers and introducing nationally and internationally known photographers to Alaskans. In 1990 he was invited by the Union of Soviet Photographers in Magadan, Eastern Russia to lead a cultural exchange of fine art photographers. In 1994 he opened The Gallery of Contemporary Fine Art Photography in Alaska and introduced a number of Alaskan photographers previously not known to the viewing public. In the late 90s he served on arts advisory commissions and boards for the city of Anchorage. Gage has curated numerous exhibitions of photography and painting. In 1993 Gage made the commitment to take his work nationally. From his 20 years of travels around Alaska and abroad he amassed a large inventory of images that span several thematic bodies of work. His lengthy studies of Bird Point and Denali National Park in Alaska, monoliths from around the world and ocean and beach shore-scapes in both Alaska and California are documentary landscapes of Zen balance. His images speak of calm balance, quiet solitude and life’s inner power of renewal. During this same period a separate but parallel body of work evolved. Gage’s Party Series is a social documentary project chronicling participants at celebrations, their interactions and emotional states. His work covering gay/lesbian events is a tribute to gay pride. Gage continues to explore new subjects and techniques to express a pure aesthetic. Gage’s work is represented by the Weston Gallery in Carmel, California, the Cleary Gallery in Houston, Texas and the Benham Gallery in Seattle, Washington. He has work at the Minstral Gallery in Montreal, Canada, and Fotografie Forum International in Frankfurt, Germany. He has exhibited in Eastern and Western Russia, England and several venues throughout the United States.
