The Denali Series. 1995–2002. This was my second series, putting what I had learned from my Bird Point series in creating a sense of place. In 1995 I applied for and received a permit as an artist to freely travel the otherwise highly regulated road into Denali National Park. For 8 years, in the spring, summer, and fall, I drove the 90 mile road from Savage Creek at the entrance of the park to Wonder Lake. Unlike most of the tourists and commercial photographers, I was most interested in finding the spirit of the landscape. Viewing wildlife was more for personal enjoyment rather than artistic pursuits. Even with tour buses and the few cars on the road, I had the vistas mostly to myself and time to contemplate what the land was trying to say to me,
