A lovely image from my travels around the world. In 2019 I traveled to Portugal. Renting a car in Lisboa (Lisbon), my gal (Jean) and I drove nearly the entire country over our 3 week stay. We toured castles, cathedrals, wine country, sun soaked beaches, and snowy topped mountain passes. In one of the many bazaars and markets we visited, I can upon this display of teacups at an open-air bazaar. The array of colors and the delicate light lead me to compose this image. This image was made toward the ending of the covid 19 pandemic lock down. I made regular trips out to Turnagain Arm (about 25 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska) as a relief from the isolation that the pandemic brought on. I stopped at a wayside that I don't usually frequent. After a long walk combined with climbing a steep rock cliff (with inconveniently scattered patches of snow and ice leftover from a late spring) I can upon this magnificent figure of driftwood. Lodged between two tall rock cliffs, the raking light was just right to illuminate the figure while keeping the cliff background in shadow. Once I returned to the studio, I started processing the image file. The difficulty was making the background go dark while keeping the contrast from building up and destroying the delicate gray tones in the wood. This image mesmerizes me. The movement of the trunk and limbs transports me to watching a dancer on stage striking their many graceful poses... all at once. Blast from the past. Benny's Food Wagon is an institution in Anchorage. Since its opening in 1969, it has become a beloved roving landmark. I had driven by this scene several times noting in the early evening that the vending machine (left plugged-in after closing) looked like some kind of strange doorway. Finally, one evening, I decided I needed to make this image. Back then I was using a Hasselblad square format film camera. Making the image at twilight was crucial. The contrast of the bright vending machine and the relative low ambient light made for a negative that would print with a long detailed tonal scale but with the vending machine completely over exposed, giving it that mysterious sci fy portal vibe. The image went on to be included in several collections in Alaska. In the 2000s I scanned the negative, and in 2021 I pulled the file from the archive to make the first Pigment Ink print.
